Self-control can be defined as the power to restrain oneself from acting in ways that would be harmful to others or oneself. In other words, self-control is the capacity to do what is right, even if it sometimes hurts. It is a trait that we should always strive towards developing because self-control helps us lead a productive, happy, and successful life. People who lack self-control always struggle with unhealthy habits. You build your self-control muscles when you make decisions that benefit your long-term interests. Here are ways to build self-control. Discipline is the art or skill of training people to act following rules. Disciplined people have learned to follow through with their plans and goals despite obstacles. Without discipline, a person’s actions become erratic and unpredictable. When someone lacks discipline, they often make poor decisions that fail. A strong discipline is a necessary tool for success in life.
Stress is defined as a feeling of tension or anxiety caused by a situation requiring immediate action. There are two types of stress – acute and chronic. Acute stress occurs when there is no time to prepare for a situation, and the person feels overwhelmed. Chronic stress happens over time because the person does not learn how to deal with stressful situations effectively. It is important to learn stress management, exercise regularly, eat well and get adequate sleep. Managing stress healthily ensures you feel energized to continue working and living.
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) refers to an individual’s emotional understanding and ability to identify emotions in themselves and others and use these skills to motivate behavior change. Emotional intelligence is essential to development because it can help you better understand yourself and others. If you don’t know how to manage your emotions, you won’t be able to handle day-to-day challenges and difficulties well. You’ll feel frustrated, angry, anxious, sad, etc., and unable to cope well with everyday problems. The ability to manage disordered and impulsive emotions is what characterizes a skilled leader.
