The Dalgona Coffee Trend

For anyone that’s been online in the past few weeks (which is most obviously everyone), then there’s literally no way in the world that you haven’t come across the new dalgona coffee craze somewhere at some point.  It’s aesthetic, two-toned seriously Instagramable look and sweet taste have made it one of the most popular and beloved past-times right now while people across the globe are stuck at home, unable to pay astronomical prices for a cup of specialty coffee. So to make up for that lack in our life, we’ve found an epic, yet simple way to DIY.

All this dolgona coffee requires is instant coffee, sugar, boiling water, and some whipping. And of course, an active social media account, because otherwise, was it really even worth it? Of course not!  Although the drink, which gained its name somehow from South Korean street toffee, has only recently become popular, the drink isn’t in fact all that new after all.  But apparently that’s what happens when we have more time on our hands…we discover hidden gems and share them with the rest of the world, making them incredibly basic and mainstream.

In fact, according to sources, the terms Dalgona Coffee didn’t even really exist on Google until the end of January, which is absolutely crazy to think about, and just goes to show the power of social media influencers.  This specialty coffee has gained popularity, especially in the United States, with the hashtag #dalgonacoffee to have been viewed an impressed 3.4 million times on TikTok alone! Instagram has seen results, with the hashtag harder to avoid than to find.  When we tell our grandchildren about this time period down the line, dolonga coffee will likely be part of our stories in all honesty – sharing how those how-to videos kept us busy, and the drink itself kept us satisfied.
